Splitting the Bill

I found this extremely interesting article on splitting the bill when you dine out with friends. I've also heard really funny stories about friends who can't divide properly so I thought this would make for an interesting read...

Game Theory Tuesdays: Dividing a Restaurant Bill

A special thanks to Mike M. for suggesting this topic.

“We’re going to split the bill,” said the organizer at my friend’s ninth grade birthday party. I didn’t think much of it until I ended up paying $40 for a $10 entrée. I felt cheated because I didn’t order a drink like most others. I was afraid to ruin the party mood, so I concealed my own anger, and that ended up ruining the night for me.

If you’re like people I know, I’m sure you’ve had similar horror stories. The overall feeling is that everyone seems to pay too much and no one is happy.

Should you just pay up? Do we need to teach better etiquette? Is better technology required?
No, no, and no.

Talking to Myself and Feelin' Old

The past 2 weeks have been a blur.

Louie's cousins Glenn and Wendell came to town (along with their Moms and another Tita) for a balikbayan vacation for 2 weeks. Actually, Glenn was only supposed to be here for a week. And then it was two.

I absolutely loved having them here. You see, I'm not really close to alot of my cousins. In fact, I'm probably really close to just three of 'em (two here and one in the States). Everyone else is, um, an acquaintance, practically. So it's always a wonder for me to see cousins bond almost like its some kind of brotherhood. I never thought I'd see the time when I'd be up at 130am singing "Crazy for You" with two of Louie's male cousins and having a ball laughing about it.

Anyway, the past 2 weeks saw us in Boracay, Embassy, various other bars around the area, and Nasugbu, Batangas. I've been up til 630 AM STRAIGHT and other less odd hours of the morning. Like I said, it's been such a blur.

I'm surprised I was able to handle the nightlife actually. When we were all in Embassy, I felt a bit old, which I guess can't be helped. Mirzi was with us, and she was always constantly reminding me of how good we both look considering the company of young 'uns we were surrounded by! Even then though, I was extremely conscious that I wasn't twenty-something anymore.

And then of course, Glenn and Mirzi happened. It's so weird!!! Its amazing how your best friend's happiness can infect you. I'm so full of hope for her... for them... and that actually made me feel like I was back in high school. Hee, hee. Feeling this giddy about love was so cool.

I remember what Louie's other cousin Gerby was saying. When you're in your thirties, it's like everything passes by so fast. In your thirties, it's like you want everything to go back. My own thoughts? In your thirties, there's no time for dilly-dallying. Life moves quickly. And you see it -- your kids get older, the weight is so much harder to get off, everyone is moving up or down. It's all in your face.

So what more can I say? I'm thirty-something and feeling it. The great thing is, there are friends and family who are there to make the journey worthwhile. Who knows? By the time I hit 40, it may be the new 20. (or so Teri Hatcher says.)
